Last Thursday my friend had a distress call from his daughter.
She’s a nurse. Came off a night shift and her car won’t start.
Caught an Uber home.
She’s massively capable and competent – unflappable even. But she’s asking for help.
Here’s a question for you budding mechanics. When a car won’t start — what’s the cause?
There were his top 3 guesses:
- Flat battery
- Faulty alternator
- No fuel
He arrives at the scene with his small toolkit and tests the battery.
Battery is just fine.
The engine turns over… and over… and over…
Now they have a crank-no start.
That’s a whole new ball game!
No dashboard warning lights, no handy fault codes, fuel tank is full.
Everything looks perfect. Except the car will not run.
Something is amiss – but what?
This got me thinking about parallels to many of my clients. Massively capable, competent, and unflappable leaders who nevertheless reach out for help solving problems that they can’t immediately see or diagnose.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve recorded a few videos sharing some of their stories. Stories about fixing elusive, often hidden problems.
I’ll share the links to these videos with:
(Psst. The fix for my friend’s daughter’s car is at the end of this post)
You can’t fix what you don’t see — and you can’t see what you don’t look for.

Summary & Conclusion
When a system breaks down, we often look for the obvious cause — a flashing warning light, a flat tyre, an empty fuel tank. But in organisations, many of the problems that hold teams back are subtle, behavioural and hidden beneath the surface.
These five short videos offer a window into what’s really going on when performance stalls, collaboration erodes and ambition is out of sync with belief.
What they reveal is this:
- The fix is rarely about just tools or strategy.
- It’s almost always about people — and how they think, relate, behave and lead.
And once you tune into that? That’s when the transformation begins.

P.S. The car from earlier? Turned out to be a cracked key fob — the issue was hidden and seemingly minor, but it brought everything to a halt. Sound familiar?
